Air traffic control novel takes off with third printing

Newcastle, Wash. (November 2000) — Japphire announced today its third printing of TRACON, a suspense novel about air traffic control by Paul McElroy, bringing to 25,000 the number of copies in print.

Japphire made the announcement about its first title on the heels of a second printing, which was scheduled just six weeks after publication. The independent press attributes part of the novel’s early success to word-of-mouth promotion, which generated considerable coverage in the aviation press as a result of the author’s attention to detail and an understanding of the nuances of air traffic control.

“Aviation enthusiasts love the authenticity,” Marketing Director Amy Falen said. “We’ve had commercial pilots confess that they’ve almost missed their flights because they can’t put TRACON down.”

TRACON paints an insightful, behind-the-scenes portrait of the legendary O’Hare Airport in Chicago. McElroy creates a chillingly realistic fictional exposé of the life of an air traffic controller and an airline disaster waiting to happen.

Controllers are convinced the computer highlighted in TRACON will run two planes together someday based on numerous near misses they’ve seen on the job. The Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune and The Boston Globe, among others, have reported on several such incidents in the last year alone.

McElroy is a veteran reporter and editor, formerly with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Chicago Sun-Times. A Chicago native, he now resides in the Seattle area.
